Getting your licence — class by class
We train in every German licence class: motorcycle, car, trailer, truck, bus and tractor. Theory and practical lessons follow a binding syllabus; the dates themselves we arrange individually with you.
Training
The classes in detail
Pick the area that fits you. Every course follows a syllabus set by the German driving-instruction regulations — how many practice drives you need depends on your own progress, not on a fixed package.
Motorcycle, moped and Mofa
- A
- Motorcycles over 50 cc or faster than 45 km/h, and three-wheelers over 15 kW. Minimum age: 20 with two years’ prior A2 (the step-up needs only the practical test), 21 for three-wheelers over 15 kW, 24 for direct entry. Includes: A1, A2, AM.
- A1
- Light motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW, power-to-weight up to 0.1 kW/kg. Minimum age: 16. Includes: AM.
- A2
- Motorcycles up to 35 kW, power-to-weight up to 0.2 kW/kg. Minimum age: 18. With two years’ prior A1 only the practical test is required. Includes: A1, AM.
- AM
- Two- and three-wheeled mopeds up to 45 km/h, up to 50 cc or 4 kW. Minimum age: 16.
- Mofa
- Single-seat, design speed up to 25 km/h, up to 50 cc. Minimum age: 15.
Car and trailer
- B
- Vehicles up to 3.5 t with no more than eight passenger seats, towing a trailer up to 750 kg — or a heavier trailer, as long as its permitted mass does not exceed the towing vehicle’s unladen mass and the combination stays under 3.5 t. Minimum age: 18.
- B96
- An add-on to class B for combinations with a trailer over 750 kg where the combination exceeds 3,500 kg but stays at or below 4,250 kg. Granted only with or after class B.
- BE
- Class B plus a trailer that no longer falls under B. Minimum age: 18. Prerequisite: you already hold class B.
Truck
- C
- Vehicles over 3.5 t with no upper limit, up to eight passenger seats, towing up to 750 kg. Minimum age: 18; 21 in commercial goods transport where the vehicle or combination exceeds 7.5 t. Prerequisite: class B. Includes: C1.
- C1
- Vehicles over 3.5 t up to 7.5 t, up to eight passenger seats, towing up to 750 kg.
- CE
- Lorry and articulated combinations: vehicles over 3.5 t with a trailer over 750 kg. Valid for: five years, then a further medical and eyesight examination. Prerequisite: class C. Includes: C1E, BE, T — and D1E or DE if you already hold D1 or D.
- C1E
- Class C1 plus a trailer over 750 kg within the legally permitted limits.
Bus
Classes D, D1, DE and D1E for passenger transport. The bus classes carry additional entry requirements — among them an occupational-medicine report and a police clearance certificate. Unlike the other classes, the minimum number of practice drives for D and DE also depends on the licences you already hold. We will talk this through with you in person.
Agriculture and forestry
Classes L and T for agricultural and forestry tractors. A tractor is available for the practical training.
Minimum ages, prerequisites and included classes are governed by the driving-licence regulations in force at the time. For binding advice on your own case, ask our office or your licensing authority.
Enrolment
How to enrol
You enrol in person at one of our branches. You can submit your licence application up to six months before you reach the minimum age.

What to bring when you enrol
- A recent biometric passport photo, 35 × 45 mm, no headwear
- Your identity card or passport
- Proof that you have completed a life-saving-measures course — truck and bus applicants need proof of a full first-aid course
- An eyesight test no more than two years old — truck and bus applicants need an ophthalmologist's certificate no more than two years old
- A medical certificate of mental and physical fitness to drive trucks and combinations, no more than one year old
- Bus applicants: an occupational-medicine report
- Bus applicants: a police clearance certificate (Führungszeugnis)
- Any driving licence you already hold
- The application fee
Not every item applies to every class. Call us first and we will tell you exactly which documents you need, so you only have to come in once.
Theory and practice
How the training works
Theory and practical lessons follow a binding syllabus; the dates themselves we arrange individually with you.
Theory lessons
Theory lessons are compulsory, and the minimum number varies by the class you apply for. On a theory day you sit two double periods with us — two times 90 minutes. Syllabi are available to read at the school. We arrange the dates with you individually, by phone or in the office.
PC exam practice
On three days a week you can practise for the theory test on our computers:

Practical driving lessons
The practical training also follows a syllabus covering everything the German driving-instruction regulations prescribe. For classes A1, A, B, BE, C1, C1E, C, CE, T and L there is no prescribed minimum number of practice drives in the basic training. For classes D and DE the minimum depends on the licences you already hold. The compulsory lessons — the Sonderfahrten — differ by class and by prior licences.
How many practice drives you need depends on your own ability and progress — not on a fixed package.
First-aid course
Proof of first-aid training is required for every licence class. Talk to us and we will tell you which certificate applies to your class and how you can obtain it through us.
Training in other languages
We offer training and exam preparation in languages other than German. Ask at the office which languages are currently available.
Seminars
ASF and FES
The refresher seminar for novice drivers and the driving-aptitude seminar — we run both on our own premises.
ASF — refresher seminar for novice drivers
- Who must attend?
- Anyone the licensing authority has instructed in writing to attend. Bring that letter with you when you register.
- What if you do not attend?
- If you let the authority's deadline pass, your licence will be withdrawn.
- Format
- Four sessions of 135 minutes each, plus one assessed drive. There are no regular driving lessons. The assessed drives use our approved training vehicles.
- Group size
- Minimum 6, maximum 12 participants.
- Certificate
- Issued only if you attend every session in full.
FES — driving-aptitude seminar
- Who can attend?
- Attendance is voluntary. A points reduction is possible under certain conditions.
- Format
- Two 90-minute modules (the traffic-education part) at least one week apart here at the school, plus two 75-minute sessions (the traffic-psychology part) at least three weeks apart with a traffic psychologist.
- Group size
- 1 to 6 participants.
- Points reduction
- With up to five points on your record, voluntary attendance removes one point. From six points upwards no reduction applies. At eight points the licence is withdrawn. Voluntary attendance for the purpose of reducing points is possible only once every five years.
Whether and to what extent a reduction applies in your case is confirmed by the licensing authority.
